Are you overweight?
The medical community uses an equation to calculate how overweight a person is. The result of the calculation is called the Body Mass Index (or BMI). Individuals whose BMI is below 35 can be considered for Breast Reduction surgery. Each individual is very different, therefore a consultation is necessary to determine if you are a good candidate for surgery.
To calculate your BMI, please use the following formula:
| BMI Formula |
| |
Weight in Pounds (Height in inches) x (Height in inches) |
|
| BMI = ( |
) x 703 |
| |
|
| BMI Range |
< 25 25-30 30-35 35-40 > 40 |

Normal Overweight Obesity, Class 1 Severe Obesity, Class 2 Morbid obesity, Class 3 |
Those individuals whose BMI is above 30 are generally not considered good candidates for surgery. Patients with a BMI of 35 or more are considered very high risk.
If you have a BMI over 30, you are NOT a god surgical candidate and we recommend the following to help you achieve a lower BMI:
1. See your primary care physician to evaluate your overall health status.
2. Upon approval from your doctor, begin a safe diet and exercise program. Your physician can help you design a program that will be individualized for your greatest success. By clicking below, you can refer to our specific glycemic index diet for additional suggestions.
3. Join a weight loss program such as Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, or Curves. You can also visit your local YMCA for additional help and services.
4. Exercising with a friend helps to keep you motivated and encourged.
